Research Interests: (Summary)
I have an interest in cardiac physiology, in particular pressure volume loop analysis of cardiac contractility and relaxation, as well as non-invasive techniques such as cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and echocardiography. I have developed an animal model of diabetic cardiomyopathy, which develops functional and structural abnormalities consistent with those changes seen in humans. Furthermore, this has led to the discovery that protein kinase C beta isoforms play a significant role in diabetic cardiac complications. Inhibition of this isoform in the animal model has provided the preclinical basis for a human trial involving protein kinase C inhibition.
