Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for the University of Melbourne Echocardiography Database
How do I license the software?
This software is distributed free to the participants of the Diploma of Perioperative Critical Care Echocardiography, from the University of Melbourne. This may then be used by the students subsequent to completion of the course. Other people may download the software and use it for a 30 day evaluation period. Should you wish to license the software, please contact the course office ContactUs. All departments require a licencing arrangement.
Will the software work on a network?
Yes. The data files are installed on the central file server. From the remote desktop, and network drive is mapped to the file server in the echocardiography database directory. A shortcut is made to the executable file Echo database.exe
However, certain files must be installed into the Windows directory of the local workstation in order for this program to run. The easiest way of doing this, is to install the database on to the local workstation as well, and then delete these files from the echocardiography database folder on this local workstation. Then make a shortcut to on the file server as above. The local database files should be deleted, since the workstation will automatically start using the local version if there is a network interruption.
Will this database run using Windows Terminal services?
Yes. Terminal Services is available on Windows server software as well as Windows XP. This is particularly convenient for a hospital unit to use, since it would allow remote access from any Internet destination. The program is run locally on the file server, with the screen refreshing on the local workstation. For a hospital unit, a Windows 2003 server primarily configured for terminal services access, can provide excellent remote access to this database. Additional terminal services licences may be required to be purchased. The main difficulty with terminal services relates to automatic printer mapping. This is a feature of the windows software and remains problematic. The difficulty lies where the drivers for the local or network printer to be accessed are not installed on the central file server being used in the terminal services session. If this is the case, then the printer will not be seen by the terminal server.
An alternative strategy is to install Adobe Acrobat professional, and to print reports to Adobe PDF. These reports may then be e-mailed or transferred and printed from alternative machines.
Is there individual user security?
There is no security from within this program to prevent access to any patient. Any security access restrictions are set within the Windows permissions settings itself.
Will this program run on a Macintosh?
This program is not designed for the Macintosh operating system. However current Macintosh computers may run under a Windows emulation mode and this program will then run.
Can the other people see the patients that I enter?
If you are using the database and you are the only user, then they cannot see any of the patients details that you have entered if you do not provide access to your files. However, on a shared facility or network site, anyone with access to run the database will also have access to all patients entered in the database.
