DMD
Explained

Summary
This is a news sheet which aims to publish material which relates to medical areas of interest that affect Defence Forces. In broad terms, these relate to the areas of trauma and critical care management, as well as infectious diseases and other illnesses that could be worsened or initiated by deployments. However, the subject material has wide applicability outside of military applications.

Purpose
The purpose of this new sheet is to stimulate a debate in controversial areas of medicine. The manuscripts would usually be well researched discussion documents rather than an official position statement, a guideline or protocol or a statement by a group. The material is presented as the work and views of the author, and not the institution or organisation that they represent or are part of. However, material that has no evidence base in the literature, or cannot otherwise be explained on logical or rational grounds will not be published. Letters to the editor should be relatively brief and focus on a particular point of contention raised by the newsletter in question.

Distribution
It is intended that the newsletter may be distributed in both electronic and printed forms. The newsletter will be available in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format, that can be distributed freely to others via an e-mail attachment, or alternatively downloaded from the Defence Medical Debate Web server. The newsletter itself however may not be altered or plagiarised, or posted on an alternative Web server. E-mail messages may make reference to the Web URL relating to the newsletter. The material published is Copyright, however access to the newsletter is free of charge, and authors are not paid nor are charged submission fees. Readers may wish to subscribe to the electronic distribution list for automatic distribution of subsequent newsletters.

Target audience
Most of the newsletters will be written in a similar style to a peer reviewed journal paper. The nature of the material will be pitched toward medical practitioners and medical specialists relating to the area of medicine being examined. However, these newsletters may well be of considerable interest to nursing and paramedical staff, or to administrative elements within the medical system.

Disclaimer
The materials published in the newsletters are expressly the work of the author. These views and materials do not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the organisation to which they belong, or represent ; nor do they necessarily represent the views of Defence Medical Debate.
